Convocation of Fatima Jinnah Medical College/ Sir Ganga Ram was held on 7th January 2012 for the graduates of 2010, Prof. Dr. M. Akbar Chaudhary (Former Principal FJMC) was the Chief Guest of the convocation. Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab Prof. Dr. Mujahid Kamran, Principals of of institutions, Councilor CPSP, retd Professors of FJMC, executives of AFJOG, faculty, successful graduates and proud families of graduates attended the convocation. The Vice Chancellor declared the convocation open, after this the Principal Prof.Dr. Rakhshanda Rehman presented the candidates to the Vice Chancellor, and delivered the Oath to the candidates. The Principal Prof.Dr. Rakhshanda Rehman, in her welcome address briefly described the history of Fatima Jinnah Medical College for Women/Sir Ganga Ram Hospital that at the time of the creation of Pakistan only 121 registered female doctors were available for our population. A renowned medical professional Prof. Shujaat Ali and his colleagues realizing the necessity of female health professionals, nurtured the idea of setting up a medical institute for producing female doctors and training them for providing healthcare facilities to the women of this newly established state. The Balak Ram Medical college which was established in 1942 at Queens Road, presented itself as the obvious starting point from which to make a beginning to meet this most pressing need. The idea was presented before the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who gave permission for the college to be named after his sister, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah who herself was a Dentist. The first Principal was Prof. Dr. Shujaat Ali. The College was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Khawaja Nazim-ud-Din, on March 31, 1949, the first batch of 39 students was admitted, who graduated in 1953. This number has now increased to 305. Since then FJMC has been training female students not only from Pakistan but from the entire Muslim world as well as other friendly countries. During the last 63 years, almost 9,000 doctors have graduated from here and are making tremendous contributions in the field of medical science all over the globe. The Chief Guest Prof. Dr. M.Akbar Chaudhary mentioned in his address that FJMC is a great and one of the premium institutions of the country. He also congratulated the graduates and their proud familes. He also expressed the hope that college will achieve the status of medical university soon which is his dream. He stressed that education is the essential component of personal development of any human being, and without education, no nation can develop and progress. We have examples in-front of us, of developed nations and recent one of Malaysia where the emphasis on education with budget around 21-22% of GDP for over 25 year has changed the whole scenario of a very poor country to AN ASIAN TIGER. 29 gold medals, 26 silver medals 11 distinction certificates awarded to medical graduates, best graduate nurse, best poetess and best debater of year 2010. Dr. Aysha Aslam was declared the best medical graduate and Miss Shumaila Ali was declared the best graduate nurse of 2010 and were awarded President’s Gold Medal.
Soveniours were presented to the Chief Guest and Vice Chancellor by the Principal. Convocation was declared closed at 11.50 a.m and procession left the hall.
